Turning “Consequences into Opportunities”
Horizons, a component of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, is a program which has been cited “as a uniquely effective treatment program for women with addictions.” Multiple social, psychiatric, and medical services are provided women and their children.
Evergreen provides support specifically for pregnant and/or postpartum women and their children who are among those utilizing the 16 residential units managed by Horizons–the Sunrise program. These women are considered to have successfully completed the one-year residential component when she has achieved several goals, including achieving sobriety for one year, having a job, a new place to stay, a bank account, appropriate child care, and a network of support (a 12-step sponsor or support group).
Evergreen’s support includes providing transportation to church activities and items which aid in support for their home and children. Women and children have become valued as part of the Evergreen “family” and are often an inspiration for others as they successfully recover and turn their consequences into opportunities.
